Being part of the Cook Islands community means stepping up to protect it. That is why we are so incredibly proud of Jacopo’s ongoing commitment as an operational firefighter with the Puaikura Volunteer Fire Brigade.
Founded in 2002 in the village of Arorangi with just eight members, the brigade has grown remarkably. As highlighted in a feature published by the Fire and Emergency New Zealand official portal in August 2025, the crew had expanded to 25 dedicated volunteers at the time—including 10 amazing female firefighters. Today, they continue to be a pillar of safety and support for our local area, always ready to answer the call.
Recently, the brigade received a significant boost in operational readiness. Thanks to the strong emergency services relationship between New Zealand and the Cook Islands, Fire and Emergency New Zealand delivered crucial structural firefighting gear to bolster the frontline response. This new equipment is a game-changer, ensuring that our volunteers are better protected while they put themselves on the line to keep the rest of us safe.
Jacopo and his fellow firefighters recently tested out their new gear. Seeing the crew geared up and ready to respond is a powerful reminder of the spirit of service and mutual care that runs deep in these islands.
Whether we are guiding you through the coral reefs or answering an emergency call on land, our philosophy remains the same: we protect and cherish the home we love. A huge thank you to all the volunteers who give their time for the community!
