Stepping into Private Snorkel: The Journey
Where the Lagoon Comes Alive
The Ocean Whispers
If you’re drawn to the ocean’s beauty and eager to explore Rarotonga’s diverse marine landscapes, Ariimoana’s Snorkeling Tours offer two unique experiences tailored to your comfort, confidence, and sense of adventure. Whether you are just beginning your snorkeling journey or seeking an exhilarating encounter with the deep blue, each tour is led by a knowledgeable local guide who shares a deep connection to the island’s reef and natural rhythms.
Lagoon Snorkeling Tours
Perfect for beginners or those seeking a relaxed swim, the Lagoon Snorkeling Tour is your gateway to Rarotonga’s calm, shallow waters. Operating daily at any tide, this peaceful, low-impact experience invites you to gently explore a thriving tropical ecosystem. Just beneath the surface, vibrant marine life is within easy reach—expect to swim alongside schools of trevally, damselfish, wrasse, parrotfish, and moray eels, while discovering intricate hard corals and fascinating creatures like starfish and sea cucumbers. Guided with deep respect for the environment, you will learn to observe without disturbing, appreciating the delicate balance of these reef communities. It is a mindful and eco-conscious introduction to the underwater world, allowing you to connect with the lagoon’s natural rhythms while treading lightly.
Reef Passage Tour
Designed for competent swimmers confident in deep water (up to 25m) and shifting currents, the Papua Passage Tour offers a bold, transformative connection with the ocean. Operated daily at low tide for safety and harmony with nature, this adventure leads you through a dramatic, narrow corridor flanked by coral walls. With the sandy bottom always in view, you will swim through a natural “aquarium” teeming with life—expect thrilling encounters with hawksbill turtles, puffers, porcupinefish, moray eels, and stonefish. In optimal conditions, advanced snorkelers may even venture beyond the reef’s edge into the open Pacific, where expansive coral gardens spill into the deep blue. As with all Ariimoana experiences, this journey is guided with deep ecological care. Every movement is intentional and respectful, allowing you to witness the untamed spirit of Rarotonga’s outer reef while becoming a seamless part of its living ecosystem.

Route Overview.
Your journey begins at Ariimoana’s base, where all of our private tours set off. From here, you’ll step onto the golden sand that lines the lagoon, a peaceful gateway to the vibrant marine world that awaits. For the Passage Snorkeling Tours you’ll take a short walk along the beach, feeling the sand beneath your feet as you make your way toward the reef. As you go, the lagoon opens up and the water deepens in color — until suddenly, you’re face to face with the spectacular blue of the passage, where the ocean breathes in rhythm with the reef. For the Lagoon Snorkeling Tour, there’s no walk needed — just enough time to slip on your fins, adjust your mask, and you’re ready to glide into the water. Within moments, you’re surrounded by coral gardens, darting fish, and the peaceful stillness of the lagoon. Whichever route you choose, you’ll be guided by local experts who know the reef’s rhythms, ensuring a safe, respectful, and unforgettable experience.
Physical Requirements
To fully enjoy your Private Snorkeling Tour, participants should feel comfortable swimming in open water and using basic snorkeling gear such as a mask, snorkel, and fins. For safety reasons, this tour is not recommended for individuals with a fear of open water, significant discomfort with wearing a mask, or medical conditions that affect breathing, balance, or cause disorientation. The Papua Passage Tour is best suited for experienced snorkelers, as it may involve deeper sections, shifting currents, and changing visibility. The Lagoon Snorkeling Tour, on the other hand, takes place in calm, shallow water and is ideal for less experienced swimmers or those seeking a more relaxed encounter with the reef. All snorkeling equipment is provided, and your guide will assist you in getting comfortable before entering the water. Your well-being is our priority: our team will stay close by throughout the experience, offering support, adjusting to your comfort level, and ensuring a safe, respectful, and rewarding connection with the reef and its marine life.
