Respect Sea Turtles
Don’t touch them. Don’t ride them. Watch from a distance.
Sea turtles are ancient and fascinating creatures that have swum in our oceans for millions of years. Today, many species are endangered — and our behavior can make a real difference.
Why shouldn’t you touch sea turtles?
It causes stress. Turtles are wild and sensitive animals. Human contact can trigger acute stress, affecting their feeding, migration, and reproduction.
They can drown. If grabbed or held underwater, they may struggle to reach the surface and risk drowning.
They can be injured. Their shells and flippers aren’t built to bear the pressure of human contact. Even a light grip can cause internal damage or physical harm.
Risk of infection. Human hands can carry bacteria or pathogens that may compromise the turtle’s health.
You could also be at risk
Turtles may bite or scratch if they feel threatened.
In many countries, sea turtles are protected by law: harassing or touching marine life can result in fines or criminal charges.
The right way to interact
Keep at least 5 meters (15 feet) of distance.
Observe in silence — never chase them.
Avoid using flash photography.
If you see a turtle in trouble, don’t intervene alone: alert a guide or local authority.
