Lagoon & Beyond: Oro te Moana – The Ocean Whispers

If you’re drawn to the ocean’s beauty and eager to explore Rarotonga’s diverse marine landscapes, Ariimoana’s Snorkeling Tours offer two unique experiences tailored to your comfort, confidence, and sense of adventure. Whether you’re just beginning your snorkeling journey or seeking a more exhilarating encounter with the deep blue, each tour is led by a knowledgeable local guide who shares a deep connection to the island’s reef and rhythms.
Papua Passage

The Papua Passage Tour is designed for experienced snorkelers seeking a bold, transformative connection with the ocean. This adventure leads you through a narrow, dramatic corridor flanked by coral walls, where strong currents and shifting visibility demand confidence and awareness. With the sandy bottom always in view and vibrant marine life surrounding you, the journey through the passage is both thrilling and deeply humbling. When ocean conditions are optimal, and only for those with advanced ability, you may venture beyond the reef’s edge into the open Pacific — where expansive coral gardens spill into the deep blue, revealing the raw beauty of Rarotonga’s outer reef. As with all Ariimoana tours, this experience is guided with deep ecological care. Movement through the passage is intentional and respectful, minimizing disturbance to this sensitive marine corridor. The tour is timed with low tide not only for safety, but to align with the natural rhythms of the ocean, ensuring that your presence becomes part of — not separate from — this living ecosystem. Operated daily at low tide, the Papua Passage Tour is a powerful way to witness the untamed spirit of the reef, responsibly and with reverence.
Lagoon Snorkeling

For those new to snorkeling or simply looking to enjoy a relaxed swim, the Lagoon Snorkeling Tour is the perfect starting point. Set in calm, shallow waters, this experience invites you to gently explore a thriving marine ecosystem — home to tropical fish like damselfish, parrotfish, moray eels, and schools of trevally. Just beneath the surface, you’ll discover intricate coral gardens and fascinating creatures such as sea urchins, starfish, and sea cucumbers. More than just a tour, this is a peaceful, low-impact way to connect with the lagoon’s natural rhythms. Guided with care and deep respect for the marine environment, you’ll learn to observe without disturbing, appreciating the delicate balance that keeps these reef communities alive. Operated daily and at any tide, it’s a mindful and eco-conscious introduction to Rarotonga’s underwater world — perfect for those who want to experience beauty while treading lightly.
Avaavaroa Passage No Longer Operational

The decision by Ariimoana to suspend the Avaavaroa Passage tour comes from direct observation of rapid negative changes in the health of the marine ecosystem caused by the high frequency of large groups in the area. This excessive pressure threatens not only the fragile coral reef but also the safety of visitors. If the situation continues, the green turtle colony in the area is at risk of disappearing, resulting in severe and irreversible environmental damage. Despite numerous requests from Ariimoana for stricter regulations and access limitations, the lack of concrete responses has led to the choice not to be complicit in potential irreversible damage. In line with Ariimoana’s philosophy and responsibility to preserve the natural heritage for future generations, they have decided to suspend this tour, reaffirming their commitment to eco-friendly and respectful tourism. The hope is that soon other operators in the area will recognize these risks and, with the primary goal of preserving and conserving the ecosystem, allow this magnificent natural wonder more space to breathe.
